The Textures You'll Find in San Diego Homes
Texture is regional. What's standard here isn't standard elsewhere, and the era your home was built in tells us most of what we need to know before we even walk in.
Orange Peel.
The dominant texture in San Diego. A fine spray with a soft, dimpled surface. Standard in essentially every tract home built in Carmel Valley, Torrey Hills, Pacific Highlands Ranch, 4S Ranch, and Rancho Peñasquitos from the mid-1980s forward. It sounds simple to match, but the spray consistency varies from builder to builder, and often from phase to phase within the same neighborhood.
Knockdown.
Sprayed heavier, then flattened with a blade after a short set. Common on ceilings countywide and on walls in newer construction and 1990s to 2000s builds in Poway, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, and Chula Vista. Timing is everything. Knock it down too early and it smears, too late and it barely flattens.
Skip Trowel and Hand Textures.
Applied by hand, not sprayed. Found in older Del Mar, La Jolla, Point Loma, Kensington, and Mission Hills homes, plus Spanish and Mediterranean-style builds throughout the county. These have to be matched by feel and rhythm rather than equipment, and they're the hardest kind of matching there is.
Santa Fe and Monterey.
Broad, soft-edged troweled textures on Southwestern and Spanish revival homes. Common in Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, and older custom builds.
Acoustic and Popcorn Ceilings.
Sprayed acoustic texture, standard on ceilings in homes built before the early 1980s. Most homeowners want it gone.
Smooth (Level 5).
No texture at all. The dominant choice in modern remodels across Del Mar, La Jolla, and Carmel Valley. Requires a full skim coat.
How We Match Texture
Identify What You Have
We look at the existing surface up close and determine the type, the weight, and whether it was sprayed or applied by hand. Ceilings and walls in the same house are frequently different, and we treat them separately.
Test on a Sample Board
We mix, spray, and knock down on a scrap board, then hold it directly against your wall in the room's own light. If it's off, we adjust the mix, the pressure, or the tip and test again. This step is non-negotiable, and it's the one most contractors skip.
Prep and Mask
Floors, furniture, trim, and adjacent surfaces get covered. Texture spray travels further than people expect.
Apply and Blend
We feather the new texture into the existing surface across a wide transition area rather than stopping at the patch edge. A hard boundary between old and new texture is visible forever, no matter how good the match is.
Prime and Paint
New texture is porous and absorbs paint differently than the aged surface around it. We prime it and paint out to a natural break, whether that's a corner, a ceiling line, or the full wall, so there's no sheen difference giving the repair away.

Why DIY Texture Almost Never Matches
The aerosol cans at the hardware store come in two or three generic settings, and your wall has a specific one. Even when the type is right, the spray pattern, droplet size, and thickness usually aren't.
The more common failure is subtler. The texture matches reasonably well, but it was applied over a small area with a hard edge, and that square outline shows through the paint under side lighting. Or the fresh compound absorbs paint differently than the surrounding twenty-year-old surface, so the repair reads as a dull patch even in the exact same color.
Matching well takes the right equipment, the right mix consistency, correct timing on the knockdown, a wide feathered transition, and priming before paint. Miss any one of those and the patch still shows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you match my existing texture exactly?
In nearly all cases, yes. We test on a sample board and hold it against your wall before touching the repair. On unusual or heavily aged textures, painting the full wall may be needed for a truly seamless result, and we'll tell you that upfront.
What texture is most common in San Diego homes?
Orange peel on walls and knockdown on ceilings in homes built from the mid-1980s on, which covers most of Carmel Valley and inland North County. Older Del Mar, La Jolla, and Point Loma homes often have hand-applied skip trowel.
Can you make my textured walls smooth?

A single room is usually two to three days including prime and paint. Whole-house projects take longer, and coastal jobs during May Gray and June Gloom need extra drying time between coats.
Do you have to paint after texturing?
Yes. New texture is porous and takes paint differently than the surrounding aged surface, so priming and painting is what completes the match.
Can you fix a bad texture job someone else did?
Regularly. We can blend it out, remove and redo the section, or retexture the full wall or room depending on how far off it is.
Will my house be covered in dust and overspray?
