Before Anything Gets Scraped: The Asbestos Question
If your home was built before 1980, have the ceiling tested before anyone touches it.
Acoustic ceiling texture from that era can contain asbestos, and scraping it dry releases fibers into the air of the room you live in. Testing is inexpensive, a lab turnaround takes a few days, and it settles the question. Removal of asbestos-containing material is regulated in San Diego County and has to be handled by a licensed abatement contractor, not a drywall crew.
Here's how it breaks down locally. Most of Carmel Valley, Torrey Hills, Pacific Highlands Ranch, 4S Ranch, and Rancho Peñasquitos was built after 1985 and comes back clean. Plenty of homes in Clairemont, Point Loma, El Cajon, La Mesa, Chula Vista, and older parts of Poway and Escondido are from the era where it's a real possibility.

How We Remove Popcorn Ceilings
Assessment
We look at the ceiling, the age of the home, and the condition of the drywall underneath. Water stains, sagging, or previous repairs change the scope, and we'd rather find that on the estimate than mid-job.
Containment
Floors, walls, furniture, fixtures, and doorways get covered and sealed. Plastic goes up, vents get closed off, and the work area is isolated from the rest of the house. This is the step that determines whether you're living with dust for a week.
Scraping
The texture is lightly wetted and scraped off in sections. Wetting suppresses dust and makes the material come away cleanly instead of powdering into the air.
Repair and Skim Coat
Underneath a popcorn ceiling is usually drywall that was never finished properly, because the texture was covering it. We repair damage, re-tape any failed seams, and skim coat the surface flat.
Sanding
Vacuum-assisted sanding, then a light check with a work light held flat to the ceiling. Ceilings are unforgiving, because overhead light rakes across them all day and shows every ridge.
Finish and Paint
Smooth, or retextured to match the rest of your house, then primed and painted. Ceilings almost always need paint after removal, and doing it ourselves means one crew owns the result.

What Goes Wrong When It's Done Cheap
The two failures we get called in to fix are always the same.
The first is dust everywhere. Without proper containment and without wetting the texture, scraping sends fine particles through the whole house, into vents, and onto every surface. Homeowners spend weeks finding it.
The second is a ceiling that got scraped but never skimmed. The drywall underneath was finished to a bare minimum standard because texture was going over it, so once the popcorn is gone you're looking at visible seams, tape lines, screw dimples, and old repairs. Paint doesn't hide any of that. Overhead light makes it worse. Fixing it later means putting the room back under plastic and doing the skim coat that should have happened the first time.

Does my popcorn ceiling need to be tested for asbestos?

Either. Smooth is the most popular choice, but light knockdown or orange peel is a good option if the rest of your ceilings have texture and you're only doing part of the house.
Does the ceiling need to be painted afterward?
